Team KELP - Race to Alaska 2017

Team KELP is competing in the 2017 Race to Alaska, and we need your help!
On June 8th, 2017, Kristin & Elena will start the 750-mile journey up the Inside Passage from Port Townsend, WA to Ketchikan, AK. Our vessel? A 20' sailboat named Holdfast (a Santana 20) - without an engine. As a team of two women, we are the smallest all-female team to be approved for the full-distance Race to Alaska (R2AK).
We want our race bid to be about more than our own adventure. The R2AK traverses the Salish Sea and Inside Passage - our home waters - and we're passionate about their conservation and environmental health. Team KELP is excited to be partnering with Julie Masura , of the University of Washington Tacoma and the Center for Urban Waters, to help our journey make a positive impact. We're currently discussing the possibility of Team KELP doing water sample collection along the race route, contributing data to research on microplastics, plankton populations, or sediment contamination!
We are also excited to announce that we have also partnered with Dr. Giles and the Center for Whale Research to document and track marine mammals we see along the way to Ketchikan. The health of this environment is critical, and Team KELP is so excited to contribute to scientific research and educate people about the challenges, and successes, that we are facing.
We've put about $3,000 towards our race preparations so far, and expect to personally contribute another $1500. We're fundraising to cover the following costs:
Race Costs $3000 + $1000 inkind sponsorship
- $1,100 - safety gear, including EPIRBs
- $700 - food and water for four weeks
- $600 - standing rigging hardware replacement
- $100 - human power set-up adjustments (sliding seat rowing or pedal drive) made with roller blades!
- $500 - navigation equipment (refurbshed iPad with case & mount) includine RAM Mounts sponsorship
- $500 - other (camp stoves, storage tubs, solar power for device charging, etc.)
- $500 - $1000 - misc, unforeseen expenses
