NEPAL EARTHQUAKE RELIEF FUND

Namaste.

My name is Arpana Rayamajhi. I am an artist, born and raised in Kathmandu, Nepal. I am currently based in NYC and I cannot begin to tell you how fortunate you and I are right now. Which is why I set up this page, to make sure that we can share a tiny bit of the privilege of being alive and not being caught in the middle of  what seems like  a never ending earthquake.

Nepal suffered an incredibly powerful earthquake on April 25 2015 that measured 7.9 richter scale. This is the most powerful earthquake in the last 80 years in Nepal's history.  While most of us are comfortable in our homes, doing what we love to do and keeping up with what's happening in the world, for some, the reality is awful.  The latest news that I have received from my friends and family back home is that the aftershocks have not stopped. All of kathmandu and the neighboring regions are sleeping outside from fear of more tremors ,wreckage and death.

The DEATH TOLL HAS RISEN OVER 3000. It is only the third full day of the chaos that surrounds everyone back home. The weather is also not co-operating. Kathmandu is faced with heavy rains and most people do not have tents nor supplies to be camping outside. THE SITUATION OUTSIDE KATHMANDU IS WORSE. Villages that have nothing, not even proper infrastructure are completely destroyed. These folks that have nothing have not received help.

Its chaos. Getting in and out of Kathmandu or neighboring places is especially hard. The Government has declared State of Emergency. People who want to help are not fully able to because more aftershocks are expected for the next few days.

Our World Heritage sites, that are centuries old dating to older dynasties are all destroyed. The current architecture itself dates back to 1600s. Kathmandu Valley has 7 UNESCO World Heritage sites and most of them are now gone. While we cannot recover the history of the materials and the structure, a proper reconstruction in Nepal would take well over a decade or even two.

The situation on the 25th, 26th was overwhelming and desperate. There are many people who have set up charity for people back home. Nepal has not seen such a desperate time of such massive devastation in a while and honestly, most of us do not know how to deal with it. BUT WE ALL WANT TO HELP.

What we do know is,  money helps and we will need it coming for months to come.  We need food/clean water/ first aid kits/ tents/ blankets for everyone back home. A little generosity will go a long way. The city has suffered immense property and infrastructure damage. Hospitals are overcrowded. Food, electricity, television, internet and telelphone lines pretty much dead. The death toll is rising.

WE CAN ALL HELP MAKE THE PROCESS OF HEALING AND REHABILITATION A LOT SOONER IF WE ALL GET TOGETHER AND JUST DONATE A DOLLAR.

1 USD = 101.94 NRS.

That is almost two meals worth for an average Nepali. Now we can only imagine  what we can do if we raise even 1000 USD.

There are many people who have set up gofundme pages for funding because we all want to donate. Big organizations already have enough fund but we are not sure that they will reach everyone.  A lot of friends and family are asking to give it to people directly in need. So as of now if  we meet the 10000 mark, a part of the proceeds will go to SHELTER, a childrens home ( they have their own page- you can also donate to them if you like) and  I am still narrowing down other organizations for women, children and animals so we can give them out directly.  I will keep us posted on where the money is going, as i narrow down more organizations. As of now,  the numbers of organizations and information is over whelming.

Nepal is an impoverished country, but we have unbeatable spirit. We have a rich history even though we are the second poorest nation in Asia. We have somehow managed to run a country without a proper government and the concept of Karma and compassion is so deeply rooted in us, that despite all hardships the country is not in a violent turmoil like most places on earth. We really are peaceful people.

One has to go to Nepal to see why this place is so so special and for those  who do not have the means to go there to experience this beutiful country, please help out the people back in Nepal help rebuild our beautiful home.
