Surviving isolation - the effects

Donation protected
I plan on living in an underground survival bunker for up to one year. My time spent in this shelter will be in complete isolation from the outside world.

For this experiment I will play the part of a sole survivor following a huge world changing event. I believe nuclear fallout following a nuclear war is the most realistic storyline to follow.

My plan is to make the whole experiment as true to life as possible. The way I plan on doing this is by having a timeframe  (2 weeks – 1 month) where the experiment will begin but I will not know the exact date or time. One of my team will be the person who will “sound the warning” when I need to make my way to the underground shelter. By doing it this way I will only be able to take with me what I can grab and carry in the short time it will take me to get from my location to my bunker. I will be given a one hour time window to grab what I can and head to my shelter. As soon as I am inside and the door is closed I will be completely isolated for the entire duration of the experiment.

I will have some basic provisions in my shelter – for example, food supplies, stored water etc but I will need to ration this as well as find methods to supplement my needs without leaving the shelter. This is where I believe secondary experiments will come in. Trialling new food growing techniques, water filters etc all can be done in a real life situation over an extended period of time. The results of each trial will then be very detailed and will give the manufacturers etc an in depth look at their products strengths and weaknesses.

“Normal” survival tasks will not be as relevant as they are in other projects. For example a fire is not likely to be possible in my shelter due to lack of sufficient ventilation.  I will be unable to hunt for food, search for water or forage for supplies. This project will be strongly focussed on the mentality of survival and the psychological skills required to sustain long periods of time in complete isolation

The Challenges:

Just one man – alone, Just one bunker – underground, Just time – one year, no company, no interaction, no safety net. Just me – alone, trying to survive!

Supplies to last half of the planned duration of my stay. The second half of the project will be reliant on me being able to produce my own supplies. Growing food, keeping clean, staying sane – success based on my decision making. Can I make the right ones after living in complete isolation?

Survival – is emotional and social survival possible in complete isolation? Can a person fully return to normal life after being alone for an extended period of time?

Is it possible to source everything a human needs for survival without ever going outside?

Can a comfortable standard of living be achieved after a world changing event?

Does being prepared mean you are more likely to survive?
