Wheels for Ben

With encouragement from friends and family, we have decided to seek donations for a down payment for a mobility van for our son Ben.
For those who have not met Ben, here is his story. On March 28, 2001, we were blessed to welcome Ben into the world. Ben suffered a stroke in utero and after being born was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, cerebral palsy and cortical vision impairment. Ben is wheelchair bound due to the severity of his cerebral palsy.
Ben is the happiest kid we know and he demonstrates this to everyone he meets. Ben has touched many people in our community and the impact he has on his peers is overwhelming. He has taught his able-bodied peers to accept people with disabilities. He has also taught parents that they can look at people the same even if they have a disability. Every day, Ben shows others that even though he is different he can make a difference. But most importantly, he does all of this with a positive attitude and a smile. We know that Ben will continue to be a positive role model in the community and break down stereotypes about people with disabilities. One of the many things that he has taught us is that the “little things” are worth celebrating and to cherish what you have been given.
Ben loves to be on the move! Even though his wheelchair is his main source of mobility, he also enjoys riding around our neighborhood on his adaptive bicycle and uses his gait trainer to take steps and explore. We keep Ben active and involved in as many activities as we can. He loves to bowl, swim, visit family and friends, and go to the grocery store with us. Ben also has a very busy calendar filled with therapy, school and doctor’s appointments.
Ben is now 13 years old and it is getting more difficult every day to load him in and out of his car seat in our vehicles. We also have to break down his wheelchair and load and unload it. With a mobility van, we would be able to wheel Ben into the van in his wheelchair. We would no longer have to lift him in and out of his car seat and break down and load his wheelchair.
We both work full-time and can afford a car payment, but the cost of a mobility van is comparable to a second house payment. Please help us keep Ben mobile – lots of small donations can make a big difference in his life.
