Support CJ Palmer

The formal text and back story is outlined below. However firstly I wanted to get a little personal.

Most of you will know CJ as the transwoman and sex worker who arrived at a hotel outcall booking only to be arrested by 15 police officers for grievous bodily harm and being really confused, not knowing what was going on, because she is not a violent person and hadn't attacked anybody.

I know CJ as one of the kindest people I have ever had the privilege to meet and call a friend.

I met CJ after she was released on bail to my best friend’s house. My bestie is a single mother and sex worker. She has been my biggest support over the last ten years and CJ’s biggest support throughout this ordeal.

These two individuals are always there to help others. Since her release CJ has provided peer support for many sex workers who have expressed their fears of being tested and possibly getting a positive result and then being arrested and blamed for making the same decision their partner did. She also supporting other people living with HIV. CJ  has been doing occasional babysitting and netball coaching but it pays very little, is intermittent

CJ is the person, who despite the fuckery that has been her life over the last 18 months has put her own shit on hold to hug me as I dealt with the comparatively small chaos in my life. CJ is the woman who helps my bestie get her kid to school, provides comedic relief in the face of these dark times and cooks awesome dinners for my friend and her little family.

My bestie is a single mother who has taken in CJ's mum (super thanks to you guys for getting her over here) and CJ, has supported CJ financially, provided me and countless others a shoulder to cry on, supported our dreams and advocated for sex worker rights always. She has been the first point of contact for countless people seeking support over the years and despite any issues in her personal life she has never expected any person to help her.

However since CJ's release late last year my bestie has had the financial stress of another person in her home. Following family deaths requiring international travel, changes to childcare arrangements and emergency house repairs my besties savings have evaporated and her working availability has dramatically decreased. With the depleting savings and a decrease in incoming funds and increased expenses following urgent home repairs CJ, this worker and her daughter are facing some financial struggles.

I am asking each of you to support us in supporting the sex worker community. Ensure these two gorgeous women have a roof over their heads, electricity, food and access to health care. Donate to the gofundme, share it if you are not able to donate. These two people are invaluable members of the sex worker community. Let’s support them not with thoughts and prayers but by decreasing the anxiety around being able to pay the bills.

The trial has been adjourned because the state is still not prepared. CJ's life has been turned upside down for 18 months now and it is likely to continue for up to another 6 months, possibly longer.

Despite facing terrible adversity CJ is remaining in good spirits. Let’s work together to show her the support we have for her. Please share! Please Donate!

Over the past eighteen months there has a been a massive outpouring of support for CJ Palmer, a trans woman and sex worker who has been detained for much of this year in a male prison in Western Australia. Due to ongoing support from the community and from advocates we could fly her mother here to support her during her detainment! We thank you all so much for supporting us in assisting CJ.

After most of 2016 in prison CJ has been released on bail and is now preparing for trial date to be set in September of 2017. CJ has been through a unique kind of hell that no one should ever have to go through. While we are fighting in the hope this never happens to another trans woman in Australia, we also hope to support her with basic living costs through this time so that she can spend the next few months recovering and focusing on her upcoming trial.

This appeal in direct consultation with CJ is being managed SWEAR, our peer-led sex worker advocacy group in Western Australia. We are fighting to address the stigma that has been directed at CJ in the media and campaigning to keep her out of male prison, but we are an unfunded organisation and these financial needs are beyond our capacity to provide up front. We ask that you join with us in supporting CJ for these next few months in any way you can!

Every dollar raised from this fundraiser will go towards ensuring CJ can survive the next few months so she can go into her trial without struggling! We may not be able to help every incarcerated trans person right now but we can ensure she has as much support around her as possible and that she can cover her living costs leading up to the trial. Thank you so much for your support!
