Disabled, Future Astrophysicist!

As many of you know, I had back surgery about 6 years ago. I've had a tough time because the surgery was not successful. Permanent nerve damage was caused by the surgeon's drill slipping and cutting into my spinal cord. I am now permanently disabled and have degenerative disc disease. I see this event as a blessing in disguise. It put me in a position to re-evaluate my dreams for the future. That being said, I have decided to go back to school to pursue my childhood dream of working in a field that would impact our knowledge and understanding of the cosmos. Even If I end up bound to a wheel chair, I can work in this field successfully.

My decision to study Astrophysics goes back to my memories of living in Lake Tahoe. I remember being 12 years old standing in a clearing. I was surrounded by a pitch black vale which was broken only by the astonishing light coming from the cosmos stretching out above me. I was barely able to make out the tree line around me as I laid down and turned off my flashlight. My eyes became transfixed by objects in the night sky, a shooting star, Jupiter moving through the heavens, and the endless twinkling of a celestial dance that was unfolding before my eyes. I laid there almost catatonic from my astonishment of what I was witnessing. This is what I have in my heart and what is driving my need to obtain a degree in Astrophysics and Engineering. Unfortunately the expense of attending school is very high and I need help paying for it. One thing I will guarantee you is when I am working in my field I will make it a priority to use all of the resources I have at hand to help others reach the dream you are helping me to reach.

I attached a picture of myself and my Engineering instructor at the launch of a NASA sponsored weather balloon project that I participated in. I would like to continue to study and be part of these projects and expand my knowledge of the world around me.
Thanks for all your help.

Love,

Cesar Marin
Future Astrophysicist and Engineer

P.S. Thanks to my family for all the encouragement. I would also like to thank Neil deGrasse Tyson and Lawrence Krauss. Your work to publicize the need for advancement in space exploration and technology has continued to inspire me. Hopefully one day I can work besides such giants as yourselves.  Also a thanks to the instructors at Scottsdale Community College in being supportive and helping me with my plans to transfer to Arizona State University
