Art changes lives. For 15 years, Studio 678 has provided a free after-school photography and writing program to over 400 inner city students.
Studio 678 teaches sixth, seventh and eighth graders how to:
-use a professional film based camera
-explore their community through their own eyes
-make their own black and white prints in a darkroom
-write poems or stories to combine with their photos
-prepare their work for exhibition
-create and publish a book of their work
The life skills acquired in this process - confidence, discipline, perseverance, and problem- solving - are skills they will use for the rest of their lives.
We have a 1:5 teacher/student ratio and work with many of our students for up to 3 years allowing us to be positive adult mentors in the lives of our students.
Despite a proven track record of success, our program is in jeopardy. After significant funding cutbacks both nationally and locally, we find ourselves in desperate need to find the $25,000 to get us through the year already in progress. This money pays for transportation, food, supplies and equipment, facilities usage, teachers, exhibit and book preparations for 30 children.
Our long-term need, however, is greater than that. We need to secure the future of Studio 678 and expand to the high school offering continued opportunities for students beyond eighth grade. Additional donations would make that happen.
