East Cape Guild Scholarship Funding

Who we are and why we care:
Established in 1997, the East Cape Guild is an Mexican registered non-profit which provides educational benefits for the students of the East Cape region. The Mexican government provides free education only through the 9th grade. The costs then become the responsibility of the family.  The cost to attend high school includes tuition, bus costs, uniforms, gym clothes and other school supplies. The largest expense is often the bus cost depending on how far the student lives from the high school. To support a student attending high school averages $500 each. This is a burden that many of our local families cannot afford.
The childrens story and impact to the community:
The East Cape Guild has been working over the past eighteen years to provide scholarships to help young Mexican students attend high school. In 1998 we provided support to six students and in 2014 we supported 152 students with the cost of tuition and transportation.
The parents, despite the obvious need at first, were wary of people offering to cover some of the student’s costs.  Fast forward to today,  they are proud of the childs selection and participation and understand  the hard work it takes for their child to achieve the necessary grades to qualify for an East Cape Guild scholarship.  Today they proudly attend the scholarship award ceremony.
Unfortunately, this year we have more qualified students than we will be able to cover.  The opportunity to impact these children and their local commuities is not being met.  We need your help to  make a measurable and earned difference.
The East Cape Guild consists entirely of volunteers and all money raised goes directly to scholarships.  To raise the necessary funds we hold several fundraisers during the year.  To learn more visit our website: www.http://eastcapeguild.com

Becado Success Story

If you do banking in Los Barriles you have probably met one of our becados without realizing it.  Michael Mijares Gonzales graduated from high school in 2004 after receiving scholarships for all three years. Miguel grew up in La Ribera and following high school he attended Instituto Technological La Paz and received a degree in Administration.  He has worked for Bancomer for four years advancing to the position of Personal Banker.  Miguel says he learned English on the job.  If you need to open an account or have a problem or questions about your account he is the person you will see and you will be pleased with his efficient and helpful manner.
Miguel's brother, Jesus, also received scholarships and is about to graduate with a degree in Engineering.  These students do come back to serve the community in positions of responsibility!
