Skate On London Roller Rink Project

WHY WOULD WE WANT A FULL TIME ROLLER RINK?

A full time dedicated roller rink will have many features a general purpose community centre cannot, such as:

It will be open to all ages. More specifically, young people are welcome with or without adult accompaniment.

Many more opportunities to skate, and many more different types of themed skating.

Monthly all nighter-skates, periodic parties, and other special skating events.

Skating on PA days and statutory holidays.

A skating surface designed and maintained solely for roller skating; no slippery patches or gravel on the floor.

Fun themed decor and special effects lighting.

A second skating area for beginners and training.

A permanently marked derby track.

A great sound system, hand picked DJ's who understand 'roller skating music', and a touch screen computerized DJ system.

Flexibility to add other features as they become affordable, such as a large screen video display for music videos, training and fun visual effects, specialized training equipment integrated right into the building, a proximity card entry system, that would allow its owner entry to the building during off hours, so you could skate even when the rink wasn't otherwise open, etc.

Birthday party packages that could include: 2 hours skating, 1 hour room, rentals, food, cake and drink, photograph and invitations, all for $20/attendee (except the birthday person--they attend for free).

A snack bar.

An arcade.

More flexible admission fees, including multiple skate passes, discounts for large groups, or for people who can't skate full sessions.

There will be more features we have not thought of yet. With our own rink, we will have the freedom to implement them whenever we wish.

HOW WILL A RINK MAKE ENOUGH MONEY TO STAY IN BUSINESS?

Total expenses/week, as calculated in the business plan, and assuming we lease the 'old Zellers building' in Pond Mills: $21,000.

Income we expect to generate/week: $24,140, assuming CONSERVATIVELY estimated numbers of skaters, as shown below:

Number of average skaters expected/week: 1600. Estimated from counts from previous local area rinks, and as per the weekly skating schedule under consideration.

Money spent by average skater/3 hour skating session: $13.75, calculated thus:
Average admission for 3 hour skating session: $8 + money spent in snack bar, pro shop, arcade, etc.: $5 (national US average) + skate rentals: $0.75 (1 in 4 skaters rent (national calculated average), so $3 rental / 4 skaters).

Income generated by 1600 regular session skaters: $22,000.

Birthday parties: $1200: 6 parties (estimated from counts from previous local area rinks) X 10 participants X $20.

10 statutory holiday skates: $260, determined thus: 100 skaters (estimated from previous rinks) X 10 stats X $13.75 skaters / 52 weeks.

Saturday all day program: $240: 20 skaters (estimated from previous rink) X $12 (special rate).

All night skates: $230, rounded down to nearest dollar: 100 skaters (estimated from previous rinks) X $10 / 4.33 weeks per month.

8 PD day skates: $210, determined as per stat's.

NOT ADDED TO ALL OF THE ABOVE IS ADDITIONAL INCOME FROM THESE DIFFICULT-TO-DETERMINE SOURCES: Roller derby practice, roller derby competitions, skating lessons, club memberships, jam skate session, 50+ skating session, mom and tot session, corporate team building session, school rentals, cubs and badge programs, fitness classes, skating shows and demonstrations, and roller skates rented to dry ice rinks during the summer months (Burford, Stratford, Wilmot, etc.).
