Hog on the Range: Sustainable Farm Expansion Project
Small family farms play an important role in promoting sustainability, food security and nutrition and creating environmental stewardship for thriving rural communities such as northwest Alabama’s #Shoals area. Even the United Nations has declared 2014 the International Year of Family Farming #IYFF14, and we are seeking support to help grow our small farm to better supply grass-fed, sustainably raised speciality pork and eggs to the people in our community and beyond.
Hog on the Range was started as a self-sustainable source of food for our family and friends with the goal to raise organic livestock with environmentally friendly farming practices and permaculture.
Moving away from commercial production and #BigAg, we raise heritage breeds that are listed on the Livestock Conservancy list of endangered animals. Our American Guinea Hogs and KuneKunes are free ranged, pasture fed animals that are loved and cared for as family.
We are raising money to upgrade our infrastructure to meet the demand of the community for organic, pasture-raised food. Planned upgrades include permanent and temporary fencing, free-range livestock shelters, vermiculture, irrigation, crop rotation, fruit orchards, and other assorted needs.
Our ultimate goals are sustainable permaculture, free-range livestock husbandry, and education. We've spent the last year traveling across the country to acquire specific breeds of chickens, hogs and rabbits out-of-pocket so that we can bring these breeds to northern Alabama and provide organic food for friends, family and the community. Now we are ready to improve everything by an order of magnitude!
