Help Patients Climb Mountains

Sherpa Clinical Packaging Meets Sean Baumstark, Friedreich's Ataxia Patient and All-Around SuperStar

Sherpa contacted Sean to ask him to address our audience of clinical supply professionals at our 3rd annual Sherpa Summer Seminar.  We explained to him that we wanted him to remind our audience that their clinical supply work has direct implications for the patient, and inspire them.

Sean more than delivered inspiration. He blew everyone away, even drawing event staff away from their posts so that they could hear his story. You could hear a pin drop in our outdoor, open-air tent. Even the jets that had been zooming above during the seminar didn't dare interrupt his story of refusing to let his Friedreich's Ataxia diagnosis define him - choosing instead to live life to the fullest.

When he was done, the tent erupted, and the inspiration that he emitted was felt throughout the rest of the evening - he was the talk of Sherpa's networking hour. So many people were moved to help him in his quest to help other rare disease patients, we decided to take a page from Sean's playbook and do something about it.

Sherpa is proud to announce a fundraiser benefiting Sean Baumstark's non-profit organization, De:terminence. We are committed to raising $50,000 for De:terminence so that Sean can continue to help rare disease patients reach the top of any mountain, and help cure hopelessness.

Sean Baumstark,
Friedreich’s Ataxia Patient

When Sean was 25, he was diagnosed with a rare, debilitating and life-shortening disease.

The disease, Friedreich's Ataxia, is a multi-system enemy causing damage to his nerves, muscle control, gait distribution, spine, speech and more. When he got this diagnosis, it was devastating. There is currently no cure or treatment.

Sean Refuses to Take this Disease Lying Down

Since that diagnosis, he's chosen to conquer life, even in the midst of chaos. He bought a bike and competed in the Race Across America with three friends. He started climbing mountains. He started running, or walking, or disjointedly moving across finish lines.  His feats of physical accomplishment, including competing in ‘Race Across America’ with three friends continue to drive him and those around him to continue conquering life.He has chosen to do what he can, while he can. Right now, while he still has a choice.

Sean Chooses to Inspire Others

Sean realized that having a community was a crucial factor for him to live life to the fullest. He began sharing with other patients and challenging audiences of all ages and sizes to conquer life as well. Sean's energy and authenticity drive audiences of patients and non-patients to live life fully.

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Somewhere down the line, Sean decided that words were not enough. Action was required, and so he started a non-profit, De:terminence.

De:terminence provides practical and emotional support for rare disease patients who want to conquer physically challenging activities such as climbing mountains, running marathons, or bike riding across the country. Sean realized that while it is crucial for brilliant scientific minds to continue working on therapies and cures so that we can continue to live, having a community is important so that rare disease patients can live now.

Please Donate to Sherpa's Fundraiser to Help Raise $50,000 to Grow De:terminence and Cure Hopelessness.

Sean will use the $50,000 to:

1. Fund scholarships for rare disease patients  to climb mountains across the United States such as in California, Washington, and Colorado.
2. Purchase necessary adaptive climbing equipment for rare disease patients with muscular special needs who want to climb challenging mountains.
3. Assemble crews to provide customized physical training to patients with physical special needs.
4. Implement training programs and purchase necessary equipment to help rare disease patients complete three marathons.
