Sharon's Battle with Brain Cancer
On December 21, 2016 my family and I got the most shocking news we could have imagined , my mother had a malignant brain tumor . She had been having some trouble with her eyesight and balance issues so we took her to the eye doctor. He referred us a specialist because of a fluid build up he could see behind her right eye. A CATSCAN and MRI were done and they found a quite large tumor in the occipital region of her brain. It was decided they would operate immediately and then follow up with chemo and radiation. Her prognosis at that time was good according to the physician.
Everything went well until around July of this year, 2018. She began to experience memory problems , small things at first and an increase in her anxiety level with severe tremors which affected her a entire body . A new MRI was done and there was swelling noted in her brain .Medication was prescribed to reduce the swelling and a repeat MRI was scheduled for several weeks later.
The new MRI indicates that there is new growth of the tumor in her brain and this time surgery is not an option. Testing was carried out and several options investigated for treatment and have now been implemented providing her bloodwork remains stable enough.
Her memory issues have gotten worse. She cannot remember how to use the phone, tv remote, stove, microwave etc. All financial responsibility was taken over by myself, her daughter. She can no longer drive or handle her own medications and walking requires some assistance as her gait is unsteady and her vision diminished on the right side .
The treatments and doctor bills are covered at 8o per cent by her current insurance policy (Medicare) however there is a significant amount not covered as you can well imagine. l have had to resign my position at work in order to care for my mother as she can no longer be left alone and requires assistance with all her activities of daily living .
The only income at present is her social security which is limited. We have applied for help through social services for some basic needs, nonetheless it is a great financial burden at present with her current situation.
But yesterday after reviewing a bunch of paperwork I discovered that she had neglected to pay the premiums on her Horizon Blue Advantage Medicare plan for over 2 years. I assume this was due to her memory problems, which she was trying to hide initially. She is in danger of getting her insurance terminated which would obviously not be good given the current situation. She owes almost 3000 dollars in back premiums. I have begun paying the premiums and any additional money we can afford each month so they don't terminate the insurance. That is what prompted me to start this campaign.
Any assistance would be used for her care and medical bills and would be greatly appreciated. We want to keep her at home and happy while she fights this battle . The doctors are providing all possible treatments to reduce or eliminate the new tumor
growth. Obviously we are all
praying for the best.
Please share this campaign so as many as possible see her struggle. Thank you and God bless you.
