Studying ASL's roots in France!

Donation protected
My name is Carli Heckaman, I am hard-of-hearing, and I am an ASL-English Interpreting and Deaf Studies Major at Eastern Kentucky University. I have been studying ASL and Deaf culture for 5 years, and I can honestly say it is one of my passions.

I started my schooling at the University of Alaska Anchorage after graduating a year early from highschool in 2010. After taking ASL 101, I was recommended by my Deaf teachers to persue a degree in Interpreting. I continued taking classes, immersing my self in Deaf culture, and even restarted the ASL club that had been inactive on campus for over 7 years! After two years as president, I was proud to have helped recruit over 30 members to our club.

In 2013, my husband and I made the decision to transfer across the country to Eastern Kentucky so I could further my education at one of the top schools in the nation for my field. Upon arrival, I took the required classes to apply for the interpreting program, became highly involved with the local Deaf community, and was elected the President of ASLA. The Vice President and I started a Silent Coffee Night at a local coffee shop, and just look at our turnout!

After moving in 2013, I was diagnosed with Meniere's disease and told I will eventually be completely Deaf.  I have lost most of my hearing in the lower registers, and it decreases noticeably almost every month. As of now, my plan is to continue my studies in Deaf studies and Intepreting, and interpret until I am unable to. Then I plan on persuing teaching ASL or becoming a Certified Deaf Interpreter.

In 2014, I was one of 22 students to be accepted into the interpreter training program, one of the only accreditted ones in the nation.  Below is a picture of me interpreting for a news presentation on our schools Deaf Dorm (Living Learning Center).

Going to France would be an amazing opporunity to further my understanding of Deaf culture, ASL, and the differences in sign langauge around the world. This will be my first out of the country experience, and I feel like I could gain so much from being surrounded by such a rich culture. Additionally, ASL was formed from French sign language, and their will be a huge Deaf festival going on while we are there, along with classes, so there will be tons for me to learn.

I greatly appreciate your consideration in donating to this cause. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

This money will be used to pay the program fee of $3500, as well as my flight, meals, and tuition. This must all be paid off by Febraury 6th!

All my love,

lml/ Carli
