Send Rex to Curtis!

Donation protected
Dear Friends,

My friend and former student Rex Yape will graduate this May from Antioch High School, having received his entire K "“ 12 education from Metro Nashville Public Schools. Rex is a solid academic student, a quiet leader among his peers. His real "gift" is music.

Rex has been accepted into the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music of Philadelphia, with a full tuition scholarship, almost $38,000 annually for four years. An amazing accomplishment and the dream of every serious classical musician. Two great obstacles stand in the way. Rex must send in $1,300 with his notice of acceptance by May 1. And Rex does not own his instrument.

We, Rex's good friends, teachers and mentors, ask that you help up support Rex in reaching for this dream. A good oboe will cost $8,500.00. The acceptance fee is $1,300. With your help we hope to raise $9,800.00 to send Rex on his way. A suggested amount is $100, though any amount will be appreciated!

Since Rex first began the recorder ten years ago in my class, it was obvious that he had something special. Through the guidance and support of his band directors, Blair School of Music, Curb Youth Symphony, private instructor Roger Weismeyer of the Nashville Symphony and quality instruments provided through CMA Keep the Music Playing program, we as a community have raised this child.

Rex was born in Italy to Filipino parents who brought him to the United States for a better education and the opportunity to thrive. Rex is currently waiting for his final papers to arrive giving him permanent immigrant status in the United States, but it has been a difficult and costly journey. In March, Rex traveled (by Greyhound!) to Philadelphia at the invitation of the Curtis Institute of Music, his "dream" school. Rex was selected for one of two oboe positions out of 16 applicants, most of whom were graduate students.

The opportunity to attend The Curtis Institute will change his life forever. Rex has been granted a tuition scholarship of $37,600.00 every year for four years, BUT he must send the acceptance letter with $1300.00 BY MAY 1ST to receive that reward. Once Rex has received his official permanent immigration status, which we are assured will happen soon, he will become eligible for student grants and loans, which will help to defray the costs of room/board, books, music, etc. ($24,000.000 annually).

During my tenure with Metro Schools I have witnessed the amazing generosity of the Nashville music community as they have reached out to support people in need. I believe this is a time when we as a community can help one of our own, a product of Music City, reach his goals. Your gift will be used to cover the cost of the initial acceptance fee and toward the cost of purchasing an oboe.
