This Summer, I am planning on studying abroad in Seville, Spain for four weeks to refine my skills in the Spanish language and immerse myself in the culture.
Traveling outside of the country has always been a dream that I could only imagine. I've never been on a plane, traveled no further than Southeast United States, and have spent 90% of my life in small-town Douglas, Georgia, located roughly 100 miles from the Florida border.
I went to college with the dream of accomplishing the feat of becoming the first black medical doctor in my family and a beacon of inspiration to young black males in my hometown. Some of my accomplishments include: graduating in the top 5% of my class, presenting research at multiple research symposiums, starting Future Mentality, a non-profit mentoring-based organization which operates out of Coffee County's Boys & Girls Club, and receiving several academic and extracurricular awards during my college career.
During my time in Spain, I will be studying at the Giralda Center Spanish House. I seek to pay for my study abroad experience by diligently applying to several study-abroad scholarships, working while attending college, financial aid, and through the generous donations of supporters. In total, studying abroad in Spain should cost approximately $7,000.
This academic investment will greatly prepare me for my future. According to the American Medical Association, approximately 64% of non-English speaking patients speak Spanish. I feel as if it is important for physicians to sociologically represent the patients that they serve on a day-to-day basis. Even though I may not have the same experiences as patients I will serve, seeking to understand their experiences by researching and immersing myself in their culture will allow me to understand these experiences as much as possible.
