Oceanic Plastic Recovery
using Solar Robotic Barges
A realistic and feasible solution to recover millions of tons of plastic trash now building in massive Ocean Gyres.
My name is Wolfgang Flatow and I have a lifetime passion for Solar and a clean World. See my Solar Consultancy Web Hybrid Sunshine . I am a DIY inventor with many successful inventions & patents in Solar and IT.
I have had an active involvement with Solar Powered Ships, having designed, built and operated "Sunship 1", a fully solar powered Catamaran in 1996. In 1988 I collaborated with Ben Lexcen to build a large Solar Ocean Cruiser of similar dimensions to Planet Solar , which very nearly proceeded if it were not for Ben's untimely passing.
I am extremely concerned about our global treatment of the Oceans, Rivers and Reefs and the destruction of their ecosystems. Treating the Ocean as a garbage and sewage dump is the most abhorrent of all our abuses. It must stop!
In the meanwhile, there is a big cleanup job to recover the millions of tons of floating plastic trash from the Ocean's surface and ecosystems. The plastic concentrates in five rotating currents called gyres.
On the 12th December 2014 I conceived a solution - Solar Robotic Barges.
This gofundme funding has been established immediately to launch phase 1 of this project.
The concept is simple and makes economic sense:
* Construct a fleet of Solar Robotic Barges (SRBs).
* Program SRBs to travel between the Oceanic Plastic Garbage Gyres and nearby ports.
* SRBs scoop up Plastic Garbage at the Oceanic Plastic Gyre.
* SRBs unload it at processing stations in ports around the World.
* SRBs are remotely monitored and controlled via satelite.
Fuel costs and pollution are eliminated and salaries kept to an absolute minimum.
The costs are focused on the construction of the SRBs and a centralised control and monitoring system.
We need several hundred SRBs ASAP.
Phase 1 spans one year and involves:
* Establishment of HQ
* Consultation with Marine and Ecology experts
* World Wide Government Awareness and Diplomacy Campaign
* SRB Control & Monitoring Specifications
* Onsite Gyre Scooping and Filtering research
* Global Corporate, Government and Bank lobying
* Construction of first prototype SRB
All aspects of Oceanic Plastic Recovery by SRB to be investigated:
* SRB maritime safety
* SRB plastic scooping methods
* SRB berthing and unloading
* SRB satelite control & monitoring
* SRB maintenance
* Plastics recycling
All learnings will become public domain.
The Oceanic Plastic Recovery web will publish all project activities and news, provide interactive blogs, project team colaboration and public relations material.
We aim to gather international support and involvement of Governments, World Banks, UN, Multinational Corporations, Media, Military and Arms Industry.
The need to solve the problem is urgent. The scale of the problem is global. The benefit of a solution is global.
