Sacred Spaces of Italy

I wish to travel to Milan, Florence, and Venice from 2 June through 1 July to study sacred spaces and their relation to regional urban development. As each of these cities was governed by a particular ruling family connected with the Roman Catholic Church, they each specialized in areas which supported the wealth of the Church--Florence for trade and finance, Milan for industry and commerce, and Venice for trade and art. Thus, these activities also influence the typology of what is sacred to its populous. In particular, I intend to study how the typology of Italian Renaissance and Baroque cities developed from the sacred and advanced to accomodate modern societal needs through incorporation of adaptive reuse programs.
This is a project I want to later adapt into an analysis of the global development of urban cities, how and why they differ based on a society's idea of what is 'sacred,' and how incorporation of adaptive reuse programs can be used at varying socioeconomic scales. While statistics on population density in urban environments are available in many formats, textual comprehension does not provide an account of intangible phenomena such as natural elements, memory, and impression that can be imposed on one by experiencing space.
Sacred spaces, in particular, are places of reverence dedicated to whatever one chooses, and they form and attract a community of like minded individuals. In turn, these communities develop a typology of parameters--including geometry, philosphy, iconography, and site--that serve as an understanding of how to create spaces for contemplation, mediation, and pedagogy, which is expressed through architecture.
This project is important to me, as I can use it to apply for grants to help cover my tuition costs, possibly create the basis of my graduate thesis, and eventually adapt and expand my research into a book. While I have recently been awarded the Parsons Graduate Dean's Travel Grant to cover my roundtrip airfare for the project, as I will be unable to work during this time, I am asking for your support to help cover expenses. Though monetary support is being requested through this gofundme site, introductions to friends in these cities, guides of where to stay and eat, as well as, any advice on travel or architecture is greatly appreciated.
