This is Tucker. Tucker is my new yellow Labrador puppy that I've had for a total of three weeks now. He is barely two months old.
He is a lover of people, other dogs, and treats most of all. He is everything I could want in a life long friend, that is except for one tragic misfortune.
On June 12, I learned that Tucker has Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) after going into my vet for what seemed to be a minor cough. As it turns out, it was much worse than I had imagined.
For those who don't know, PDA is a rare heart defect in puppies that occurs when the ductus arteriosus doesn't close after three days of birth. When this happens, blood from the aorta will want to flow, not to the body but to the low resistance ductus opening and into the pulmonary artery. This is known as a left to right shunt and creates an assortment of problems. Because some of the blood is being entered back into the heart and not the body, the heart must pump all the more blood to cover what circulates in the shunt as well as what the body needs This creates a lot of extra work for the heart and failure can result, leading to coughing, weakness, and difficulty breathing.
The mortality rate is said that 2 out of 3 dogs that have this, and are not treated for it, die before the age of 1. Unfortunately enough, the procedure involves open heart surgery and is a whopping 4,000$ or so to perform. It is a very low risk, low complication surgery (complication rate of 5%) and after surgery, the pup is well on its way to living a long, healthy life.
I don't want to lose my new puppy and friend, so I'm turning to you for help. I work full time at a local restaurant to pay rent and other bills, so it is extremely difficult to gather that much money so soon.
The sooner the better with these kinds of situations and I don't want to see my Tucker suffer any more than he has to already.
