My Name is Hung Nguyen, a Houston resident. I am creating this fundraiser message to pledge for your urgent help. My 10-year college friend, Anh Bao Dang, who lives in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh city, is devastated because her beloved 5-month old son, Cao Anh Cat, is suffering from a very rare disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) type 1.
An example case of baby with deadly SMA Type I
This hereditary disease is characterised by loss of motor neurons and progressive muscle wasting, resulting in the child too weak to feed, move or breathe. This makes the child extremely susceptible to pneumonia. Currently baby Anh Cat is suffering from respiratory failure resulting from pneumonia and thus has been admitted to the ICU of Hospital for Children in Ho Chi Minh city, on September 7th , 2017. He remains with the mechanical ventilator in the ICU for special care and monitoring.
Sadly, there is no cure for this disease in Vietnam. And the ONLY one FDA-approved treatment, Spinraza, costs over $750,000, which does not include special transportation (around $75,000), thus makes it an impossible option for Anh Cat.
As I am writing this, his health is deteriorating quickly due to her pneumonia. My friend have been trying to contact all possible clinical trials all over the world with a glimpse of hope for being accepted. In the meantime, the cost of daily medical expenses is overwhelming for my friend. Healthcare in Vietnam is unique in a way that it makes her to pay up front for daily care and treatment. My friend has exhausted all her resources, and yet still struggled to pay all the fees.
Upon knowing her situation, as a friend, I feels helpless and can only rely on everyone's help alleviate the costs of this heartbreaking and life-changing event. So Bao Anh can spend all her energy on searching for a suitable clinical trial to save his life.
Bao Anh and I sincerely thank you for every dollar you are able to give. Every cent matters and we're extremely grateful.
We believe in miracle, and one day, my friend will again enjoy a moment like this:
