Keep Andrea Smiling

Donation protected
While I was on vacation with my wife Lynn and my family in early April in the Dominican Republic, we decided to stop at an outdoor cafe. It was there that I noticed a young girl playing with a local cat like little kids do. I bent down to say hello and that was when I noticed she had a serious medical condition. Her name is Andrea and she has a cancerous tumor on her tongue.

This girl is three and is as cute as a button too! She is full of life and energy as you can imagine a three year old would. You can also see the spark of intelligence in her eyes. We all played with her for a couple of hours. We played a game where we pretended not to see her while she crept up on us and surprised us with a tag.  She never got tired of playing this game either as her mom watched and laughed along. You could tell she had difficulty breathing as well as talking and eating or drinking as the tumor is so big.

The problem is that this condition is curable but as she lives in the Dominican Republic her mom has to pay for any medical treatments herself. I talked to her mom in my broken Spanish and discovered her dismay. She has no one to help pay for the costs of the treatments and surgery. You could see in her eyes that she realized that she only had a little time left with this precious little girl and was trying to make the best of them because she know she couldn't affort the cost of treatment.

I made up my mind then and there that I would help this little girl and her mom. This girl needs chemotheropy followed by plastic surgery to repair her tongue.  The mother was told it would be $33,000 US for the surgery alone. The chemotherapy, which is vital,  would be over and above that.  I am confident that if we can raise $50,000 Canadian we will be able to cover the costs of the chemotherapy followed by the reconstructive surgery. As well, this amount should provide them with shelter, food and transportation during the treatment and recovery. Any extra will go to a fund to help this family long term.

I ask anyone who knows me to help me out with this cause. Every bit helps. I also realize that not everyone I know can afford to,  but you can still help.  Please pass this link along to everyone you know.  Post it on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+.  Share with your co-workers who may be able to help, and even your kids doing a bottle drive or bake sale would be of great benefit to Andrea.

I told this woman that I would do my best to help Andrea but I couldn't make any promises. I then told her that after we get her cured that I expect an invitation to Andrea's wedding when she grows up. This caused a few tears on the part of the mother (as well as mine) as she realized that there some hope for her little girl.

Lets all help out and give this girl that hope.

Thank you everyone
