Help Sheila With Medical Expenses

It's true what they say. You never know what tomorrow will bring.  I know that my Mother in law would wake up and thank God for another day, each and every morning.  She is the type of person who always puts others first and never complains.  I love her dearly and feel helpless in trying to do something for her to make this difficult time easier.

We were looking forward to a family visit from her and Papa for Easter but as soon as they arrived from their 6 hour drive up from Kentucky, she called me and said something was wrong with her good eye.  She has always been blind in the one eye but now the other eye was also losing vision.  Once I was able to see her the next day it had gotten worse.  I took one look and called my eye doctor to get her in for an emergency appointment.  Thank God they took her in right away.  As soon as they dilated her eye and looked inside, they sent her to the emergency room.  It didn't look good.

Once she was admitted to the hospital they began talking about her possibly having a mini stroke from a blood clot that temporarily stopped blood flow to her eye. For two days she was tested, poked and prodded.  All uninsured. MRI's, CT scans and tons of blood/labs sent. Once she was released from the hospital she had an appointment the next day with an eye specialist in Downtown Detroit.

Before going in she called and was told that if she was uninsured that she would have to pay up front for the appointment. My Father in law is disabled and they live from a fixed income, his Social Security disability check. This was not an option for them but I told her to call and talk directly to the doctor the next morning. He told her to come in and they could work something out. They made her pay for a portion of the visit, which was all the cash they had on them, and she was told they will bill her for the rest.

The specialist decided it was too risky to let her return to Kentucky so he admitted her to the hospital again. She was there for six days...all uninsured. A second MRI and CT scan was done as well as a fluorescein angiograph which revealed that her retna was partially detached. This is irreversible damage. She will never be able to see clearly again. She won't be able to drive, read, watch TV, use a computer, or see her grandchildren grow.
After two days they did a needle procedure to remove fluid from behind her eye and then pumped her with IV antibiotics. Nothing has improved but thankfully it hasn't declined either.

I know she is heartbroken and devastated. I can't even imagine what the medical bills will add up to be, and I don't want her to have to worry about any of it. Ultimately my Husband and I would like them to move back to Michigan so that we can help both her and my father in law with their day to day living, Doctor appointments, meals and cleaning.

As far as getting insured, I don't want to start a political debate, but Obamacare does not work for everybody. She does not qualify for State of KY Medicaid and the cost she was told to pay monthly for Obamacare was out of their budget. She can now try and get approved for Medicare since she is disabled.
Every little bit adds up and every gift will be greatly appreciated. If you are unable to donate monetarily, your prayers are also needed and appreciated.
Thank you!
