I started NOMAT Club Bookshelves 2 1/2 years ago getting this first bookshelf from a 99 year old women who passed away on Ft Washington ave .The apt was loaded from floor to ceiling with shelves and books like a library,so I grabbed a shelf and loaded my van with books,drove down to Starbucks at 181 Ft Washington ave and began to setup when endless people some I knew and most of who I didn't coming over and asking if the books were free and grabbing.I saw the popularity in this and decided to grow it and expand into Inwood as well .
Seeing the popularity of picking up thrown out bookshelves on the street and reusing them for a good cause has been a project and turning into a job that requires alot of time and some money.Like the one at Indian road this is the third bookcase in less then 1 year to same loaction,the kids have used them as jungle gym.
The bookshelves get a plastic cover that drops down stapled into the top of shelf and thrown out broom handles are cut to hold the plastic down at bottom a cheap way of making these shelves work but they get hard usage on streets of NYC by tons of people.
At this point I am looking to raise alot of money to have plastic weather proof bookshelves made up like the ones used for Newpapers on street roughly 50" long 30"high and 10'deep and the cost of those to be made up is around $1,000 each.
Even as a Licensed NYC General Contractor and owner of A-1 Home Improver Construction Co. WWW.A1HomeImprover.com I couldn't possibly build a water proof bookshelf,nor take on the liability of it.
If enough money can't be raised to buy plastic weather proof bookshelves for the 8 we have locally and add 2 more here then I need to get volunteer groups to adopt a bookshelf or the business that they are in front of need to step up to the plate and have employees take care of them because I can't keep doing this alone anymore and will soon have to take them all down.
