Ashleigh Karkazis: A wife, a daughter, a sister, a cousin, a friend, a coworker.  As she has been a part of many of our lives, we need to be there for her at this time in her life.  Everyone's prayers, love, positive thoughts, and support are greatly needed to help her during her fight against Leukemia.

Ashleigh and her husband Sean just got married not too long ago, October 18, 2014.  When they should be enjoying their first year of marriage, an unexpected hurdle of being diagnosed with Leukemia came their way.  This is devastating for the couple as well as for their friends and family.

If you know Ashleigh, she is a fighter, no doubt, and there is no challenge that she cannot overcome!  Her strength, charisma, positivity and courage continue to shine on through her journey.

Below is a Facebook post from Ashleigh 3/30/15:

"Dear friends and family,

Thank you all so much for the support you are showing me during this difficult time. If you haven't heard yet, I have been diagnosed with Leukemia and will be fighting it with the help of the Stanford Oncology department. I have received so many prayers, texts, visits and well wishes; and feel truly blessed to feel so loved. Thank you all for everything. Here is where I start my battle and here is where your support will give me strength. Love you all! =) Ashleigh Karkazis

The following is an update provided by her mother-in-law, Kathy, on her status as of 3/31/15:

"Hi Everyone,

On behalf of Sean, Ashleigh, Kalon, Lisa, Lefty and myself, we would like to thank all of you for your concern, kind texts, emails and calls. As you can imagine, we are all completely devastated. This is where Ashleigh is as of Monday, March 30 at 8:00pm.

Ash hasn't been feeling well and had gotten a new doctor last week. This doctor wanted her own set of blood tests so Ash went for the blood test Saturday. Saturday night Sean and Ash were at our house for Sean's birthday dinner. Unfortunately Ash's phone does not have reception at our house. When they left at 9:30 she had a voicemail from her doctor saying her white blood count was extremely high (over 30,000. Normal is 3,500 to 10,500) and to get to Peninsula Hospital. They went to Peninsula but there was no hematologist doctor on duty or on call. She called her doctor back and was told to go to Stanford. At Stanford they ran a blood smear and were informed Ash has a type of leukemia. They admitted her to the oncology department of the hospital around 4:00 am. and gave her her first dose of "Atra".

They have run additional blood tests to determine what type of Leukemia Ash has but at that point they thought it was "T 15-17" and were told "If you get Leukemia this is the one to get". Yesterday morning the doctors spoke with Sean and Ash and said they now think it's "ALL". They did a bone marrow biopsy yesterday and now are "pretty sure" it's "ALL", we should find out for sure today or tomorrow. The treatment, roughly, is one month in the hospital of chemo, then 3 months out-patient chemo. After that another bone marrow biopsy will be done to see that the chemo worked.

Sean and Ash's spirits are pretty good, considering. She does want company and seems to perk up when people are around. If you'd like to visit please text Sean as to what time you would like to go. There is to be no crying, only happy faces. If you feel like crying, step out of the room. If you are feeling sick in any way, please don't go. Ash can't have any flowers or plants due to infection. They want to decorate the room, so if you have a picture of yourself with Ash, bring it along to put on the wall.

Again, thank you for your concern, prayers, texts and emails.

Hugs - Kathy"
