Please help us get Chris back home! I am setting up this fund to help with medical transportation costs for an amazing traumatic brain injury survivor. I am his Aunt Kathy and here is our story of one amazing man and the three women who, with love and determination, have beaten the odds.
My nephew, Chris, was born and raised in Ohio by his mother, grandmother and me. Chris and his Mom, Lori, eventually moved to California. Fast forward to 6 years ago, when Chris suffered a devastating traumatic brain injury. He was diagnosed as mentally unaware and completely paralyzed, which denied him any professional rehabilitation or therapy.
After several visits from Ohio, however, we noticed that Chris made unexpected improvements with the extra attention we provided. We realized that with adequate therapy Chris would have a chance to get better. Since his dismissive diagnosis cut him off from professional help, we saw that it was up to us. His Grandma and I left our Ohio home to join Lori and become Chris's full-time therapists.
Chris's Mom, Grandma and I have since stayed in shifts with Chris at the long-term care facility, working intensively to restore whatever we can for him. We have come up with a way for Chris to communicate through eyeblinks and simple gestures. Lori teaches him healing meditation, positive thinking, and keeping his mind active and involved with interesting subjects. We use music and lighting to provide a healing environment. Grandma has spent hundreds of hours massaging Chris's legs and arms that have helped him regain feeling and movement.
All of this has enabled Chris to make an amazing comeback in light of his original diagnosis. Progress is naturally slow but he continues to regain motion and the ability to express himself. He is one in a million and defies everything doctors learn in medical school.
Throughout this deeply challenging time Chris has shown us all what a wonderful man he is. He has the most positive outlook and so much love for all of us. Chris's care for other people and sense of humor still shine though. He greets us every day with a smile and a heart that he shapes with his arms. He is our miracle and the joy of our lives.
The long term care facility in California where Chris lives is soon closing permanently and his devoted Mom is undergoing cancer treatment. Chris and his Mom would like to return to Ohio with us so that we can continue to work with Chris and seek out suitable rehabilitation and therapy. For Mom Lori Ohio State University provides some of the best cancer treatment in the country.
Chris needs special medical transportation for such a long trip from California to Ohio. It is extremely expensive and not covered by medical insurance. I graciously and humbly ask for your help to get Chris back home!
