Project Philippines 2018: Mental Health Awareness-Cebu (PP18-CB) is a Service and Leadership project organized by ASEAN Youths under the non-profit organization, The Southeast Asian Service Leadership Network (SEALNet). PP18-CB is both a youth empowerment project and a mental health awareness initiative.
Mental health is a commonly misunderstood aspect of a person’s entire well being. This misunderstanding leads to issues such as neglecting self-care and attaching a stigma to mental disorders. The conversation on mental health awareness is a growing issue in the Philippines. There is then a need to push this conversation into concrete ways of spreading information and raising awareness about the realities of mental health. This can be done through community and school-based mental health awareness projects. Hence, we aim to address this need by empowering young leaders to conduct mental health awareness projects in their communities.
First, the project aims to educate students about mental health and mental disorders. Second, the project will equip student leaders with leadership and project management skills so that they will be empowered to organize their projects in their own schools and communities. This project aims to start ripples of change and awareness among young Filipinos across the country. Hence, Project Philippines 2018 is going to take place in Cebu from July 22 to August 4, 2018.
As for the local students, we are looking to help bring out their inner potential to be a leader in their community. We hope the students will utilize this project as a platform where they can learn and experience leadership and interpersonal skills not just theoretically, but from hands-on experience while gaining more knowledge on the importance of mental health and mental health literacy. Through approaches such as leadership workshops, community outreach, and mentorship, we hope to provide the mentees a space to challenge themselves, build their capacity, and have the courage and confidence to step up and advocate for a cause they believe in.
