Please help the Snowden Advocacy Group (SAG) in its effort to stop the Town of Mount Pleasant from forcing the Snowden Community to annex into the Town.
Snowden is one of the last remaining historical African American communities east of the Cooper River and was settled in the mid-1800s before Reconstruction. The properties in the community have been passed down through generations that managed to keep its rural characteristics in the face of Mount Pleasant’s grown.
Currently, one-third of the properties in Snowden do not have access to sewer service and many of the now "FAILING septic tanks" are old and present health and environmental problems.
After nearly THIRTY YEARS of attempts by residents and broken promises by Mount Pleasant Waterworks, sewer infrastructure for those properties is FINALLY being put down. BUT they are now requiring homeowners—mostly low to middle income—to annex into the Town to receive the needed sewer service.
The Town does not provide the sewer service and there is no justification for requiring annexation, which will lead to significant increases in property taxes and government by a Town Council that does not reflect the interests of this historic community.
ANY donation will help make an impact and allow us to retain counsel to lobby Town Council, the Waterworks, and Charleston County Council to let us finish the sewer project without FORCED ANNEXATION and preserve the community that we grew up in and want to raise our children in. Any remaining funds will help defray the costs for low income residents seeking to tie into the sewer.
