On May 29th, 2014, 17 year old Luke Michaels was in a serious dirt bike accident leaving him paralyzed from the waist down with punctured lungs, broken ribs and broken clavicle bone.
He was immediately airlifted to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan where he remained in ICU for a week before being transferred to Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan for inpatient treatment and therapy.
Upon being admitted to Bronson, doctors' were unsure of the extent of the damage to Luke's spinal cord, but their prognosis was that Luke would never again have any movement or sensation below his bellybutton. After undergoing his spinal fusion surgery, they discovered that the spinal cord had not been severed, but concluded it was still a complete spinal cord injury. After hearing this prognosis, thousands of people covered his surgery, his surgeons, and his situation in prayer and that's when the miracles began: One week post-surgery Luke began feeling tingling in his legs. Three weeks post surgery, Luke was able to move his toes.
While many would deem paralysis as a permanent situation/ diagnosis, Luke, from the moment of his accident, has been convinced this will not be the case. He believes for a complete healing and that he will walk again. He has relied on his faith to get him through this dark time, and by the looks of it, this positive and inspirational attitude from this young man won't dwindle anytime soon.
The Michaels' family friend, Johnny DeMaagd, created a T-Shirt Campaign while Luke was in ICU called #prayforluke, allowing the community to purchase T-Shirts with the above design with proceeds from sales helping the family with hospital bills and costs this journey has cost them. The campaign took off, and the #prayforluke trend went viral internationally, with thousands of people gathering together all over the world to Pray for Luke.
Luke's journey towards recovery has just begun, but with love and support from our community and his unwavering faith, we know he will make it through!
