I'm a freelance journalist based in New York who covers cities, police and prisons. I've written long form pieces on broken windows policing in NYC and policing in New York's subways. I've also recently covered Rikers Island Jail. You can view more of my past work here.
Reporting, and especially investigative reporting, is super difficult without the backing, money, and support from a news organization (and without a full-time staff reporting gig). As a freelancer, I'm often not given a budget for expenses and travel. Most of the time, it all comes out of my own pocket. I have a few story leads that will bring me to upstate New York and Pennsylvania to investigate on a flawed trial that could prove someone's innocence, the intersections of environmental racism and prisons, and other topics that I've been writing about for the past couple years. I'm asking for support to be able to complete this work.
I'm currently raising money to assist with my travel expenses this year for future articles and investigative pieces regarding court cases, police and prisons in Pennsylvania and upstate New York. Money will go to transportation costs, renting cars, accommodation and food while traveling. I have plans to visit three state prisons in PA and NY -- with more trips to surely be added as the year goes on. I'm also raising money to attend a few conferences that I believe will help me develop my investigative reporting skills, meet like-minded people and hear more potential stories to cover. Conferences I hope to attend include an anti-gender violence conference, as well as, an investigative journalism conference.
Any one who donates will receive email updates on my reporting trips filled with stories I find along the way that don't fit into my articles and you'll be the first to hear what I've been working on. People who donate will also be able to view my budget and see where the donated money is going.
