Michael's First Year of Seminary!

Hello Everyone!  I'm Michael Buck, and I will begin my training to become a Tendai Buddhist priest this June.  Such training would allow me to develop the skills and experience to fully assist and support the Tendai-shu Betsuin (Tendai Buddhist Institute in Canaan, NY), the Great River Tendai Sangha branch in Alexandria, VA, and all who are in need.   This seminary training will give me the ability to lead daily sangha services and rituals, to perform civic functions (marriages, funerals, purifications, etc.), and especially to be ready to act as a spiritual mentor to people who are actively seeking or following the Path.

The Soryo (priest) program is held at the Tendai-shu Betsuin and is a six-year course offered for two weeks (Gyo) in June each year, leading to tokudo (ordination).  The training is intense, with long days and limited sleep.

The training program costs $1,500 per year, which includes tuition, accomodation, and study materials.  Also required is the purchase of two sets of samue (one dark, one white), chukei (ceremonial fan), and travel expenses to New York.
