I started this page because I am trying to help raise money for my brother Anthony to have an amazing surgery. He was hit by a car in 2005 and as a result, had to have his right leg amputated just above the knee. He was in the hospital for over a month. We were so happy that he was alive, but knew that the road ahead was going to be very difficult; physically and emotionally.
In 2006, Anthony was able to get a prosthetic leg. He began to learn to walk on his new leg, but it was not the answer he was looking for. He could walk with the assistance of a cane, but he would get really bad sores after only a few hours of wearing his prosthetic leg. He would be miserable for the next week, waiting for the wounds to heal. He has had the socket on his C-leg redone several times. He still gets sores every time he wears his prosthetic leg. Ultimately, Anthony has been walking on crutches since 2005. Nearly 10 years! Long distances on his crutches cause blisters on his hands too.
A few months ago, he told me about a new procedure that is being done for amputees. It is called osseo-integration. A titanium rod is implanted into the bone of the limb that has been amputed (his femur). Part of the rod actually sticks out past the stump and becomes the attachment for the prosthesis. This eliminates the major problem that amputees have, which is the sores from the socket of their prosthetic limb.
Anthony has already gone for a consultation with Dr. Hillock in Las Vegas. He found out that he is an excellent candidate for the osseo-integration surgery. With the procedure, he will also be getting a new, state of the art prosthetic leg.
He is able to have this amazing surgery as early as this summer. He does have a substantial copay for the surgery and will have to have physical therapy after.
