Mt Surprise State School Camp 2015
Donation protected
Mount Surprise State School is a small community school located 370kms inland from Cairns. This community is small but has a very large heart and at the heart of this community is one very amazing small school.
Our school is broken into the following age groups: Year 1 and 2, Year 3, Year 5 and 6. This community of small people comprises of 16 fantastic and enthusiastic children. 80% of our students complete a round trip daily of 150 kms to attend school.
The isolation that many of the families of our community face has meant that our students have not participated in activities that their peers would have participated in living in a larger community. The families have also faced financial hardships now that many of the properties within our larger community have been drought declared.
As a school community, we have taken on the task of getting our students to Canberra in 2015 to celebrate the Centenary of the ANZACs. This is a very important celebration within the school as well as the wider community of Mount Surprise. Many travellers who pass through our area will often participate in the ANZAC service that is run by the students of the school. Another reason we are wanting to take our kids “south” is the fact that our students have never seen the inside of a commercial jet let alone taken a trip south. They were asked by myself at the beginning of the year “have any of you ever seen snow?”. One of our beautiful students enthusiastically put her hand up and told me that I could find it in her Mums freezer. On hearing this I knew that we had to include a trip to the snow fields in our school camp this year as well.
The Goals and objectives that we are working towards for this trip are:
Year 1 and 2 students are working on: Developing independence skills to read timetables, cross the road safely, order a meal in a restaurant and stay in a motel.
Through their curriculum they will consolidate their learning with a visit to the war memorial in Canberra and locate and pay tribute to their individual family members who are remembered at our national war memorial.
Year 3, 5 and 6 students will consolidate the learning activities they have completed within the history unit working on learning about ANZACs and what it means to be Australian. These students will also begin to develop an understanding of how different communities work and what it means to live within a larger community and be a functioning member of a community.
As many of our outback families are dealing with the drought, we are trying to raise as much money as we can to keep cost to a minimum. Any support that you can provide would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!
