Diabetic Alert Dog For Carter!!

Hello,

I want to take a moment to introduce our son Carter. He is a nine year old boy who is a gentle giant. He was born in 2005 at a whopping nine pounds and ten ounces. He has grown to become a 5’2” 117 pound young man.

In August of last year he was playing in his grandparent’s pool with his brother and he had cut his foot. At this point his life would change forever.

Carter’s grandmother is a Type I diabetic and she has been for over forty years. Carter had been complaining that he had to go pee quite often that day and it was noticed by his mom. So after cutting his foot, his mom jokingly asked if she could use the glucose meter and check his sugar level. Well, this changed the course of the upcoming twenty-four hours and his life.

The meter read six hundred plus (600+) and that we should seek medical attention. So, after thinking it was a fluke, she tested his sugar level two more times. With the same reading popping up, his mom decided to bring him to the pediatrician. It was there that our worst fears began to come true.

I was at work and received a call from his mom, Jamie, informing me of what happened. The events that followed included an extensive stay at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, a solid month’s worth of doctor’s appointments, learning how to do calculations for insulin to carbohydrate ratio’s, and trying to convince a small giant how to deal with the pain of his injections and most of all wonder how it would affect the rest of his life….

It was one of the hardest things to comprehend as a parent. We hurt every time we saw a tear in his eye when he had to adjust something or prepare to give him a shot at night before bed that he absolutely dreaded.

Carter has come a long way. Within a short time he learned that he didn’t have a choice but to take the shots or it could hurt him. We are happy to say that after seven months Carter now checks his own blood sugar levels and gives his own insulin shots every day!

But even though we have worked to get to this point, Carter still struggles to keep his blood sugar levels within a safe range. His blood sugar levels were easily maintained for a short time as he was in what they call a “honey moon” stage where his pancreas continued to spit out a little insulin here and there. Now Carter is out of that phase and his Pancreas has stopped producing insulin all together.

This change has left his blood sugar levels bouncing up and down which can cause various health issues including kidney damage.

So we recently found out about “Diabetic Alert Dogs of America” through an article on channel 9 news. Basically, this dog would alert Carter whenever his blood sugar levels drop below or went above the healthy ranges.

Right now Carter is at the age where he want to play outside and visit friends. This includes him wanting to do sleep overs. That can’t happen due to his need to have his blood sugar closely watched. And, not only this, but what he eats has to be monitored and calculated to make sure he is given the right amount of insulin.

Carter is pretty good at figuring out what the needs are, but he is nine. He forgets, gets too caught up in playing and simply doesn’t want to think about it at times. Also, it’s difficult to teach people to take care of him without giving them a ten page instruction guide.

This dog would be by his side with him everywhere, reminding him of when he needs to check his blood sugar. The dog would alert him by pawing at him until he responded. This company works to train the dog specifically for Carter. They teach Carter to command the dog, they do a presentation for his teachers and classmates on what the dog does. Not to mention provide a piece of mind for all that care for Carter.

It is a tremendous opportunity for Carter to feel normal as a kid. Right now Carter has to be taken out of class to have his blood sugar check throughout the day. He recently began counseling because the effects of diabetes are making him feel different than his classmates. He has done well with the counseling, but I feel that a Diabetic Alert Dog would boost his self-esteem leaps and bounds.

So I am asking you to donate to help Carter be a kid. To help him live as a normal nine year old should live. Carter tells me he wants to be a firefighter like his dad when he grows up, and it would be a dream come true if he reached his goal of following in his dad’s footsteps… and mean the world to me, his dad. So please help me provide an amazing gift of normalcy to my son!
