ORRHS EmpowORR Garden
Our Mission Statement: To empower students with the skills for a successful future and build lasting ties to our local community.
History: This year (2016-2017) Old Rochester Regional School District added a new class, The Transition Program. This program is dedicated to providing vocational, social and educational opportunities for students ages 18-22 with moderate to severe disabilities.
Vision: Since the inception of this program in 2016, the mission of our Transition Class is to have exposure and experience in a variety of skills and opportunities. The hope is that these experiences will lead to successful and meaningful life paths tailored to each student’s unique gifts and abilities.
EmpowORR Garden: With the support of local community partners, the garden will provide an opportunity for collaboration and continuity amongst the Transition Program, school district and Tri-Town area. The EmpowORR Garden will allow opportunities for students with unique abilities to learn vocational, language, social and community-based skills. In addition, this garden will be a platform for a wide range of Old Rochester Regional School District students, staff and community to participate in a program to foster community service, philanthropy, horticultural knowledge and vocational aptitude. Ideally, the students participating in EmpowORR Garden will be able to sell produce at the local Farmer’s Market and give away the excess produce to families in need within the community. As the garden continues to expand and grow, another goal would be to reduce waste in our schools by providing a composting system. As the EmpowORR Garden evolves, we hope to include input from other community members and create a sense of great pride for Mattapoisett, Marion and Rochester.
