UYI Athletic and STEM Programs 2015
Urban Youth Initiative believes in the power of sports to motivate children's academic potential. Besides the motivation, children need physical activity. The correlation between academic achievement and the access to organized physical activites, is unprecedented. Unfortunately, in urban settings, access to organized activities are very limited. There are programs working to address this deficiency, however, there are still major shortcomings. Project Olympiad is working with the LeAp afterschool program to facilitate their afterschool program in JHS 125, a middle school in the Bronx.
The Urban Youth Initiative will supplement these programs by organizing site and age specific sporting and physical engaging activities. The innugural fundraising campaign commenced during winter of 2015. However, we were unable to secure the necessary funding to get all of our initiatives off the ground. With the support from the Yip Harburg Foundation, the UYI was able to successfully launch our STEM program but we still needed support to get our athletic program started.
Thanks to JHS 125, UYI was able to secure 12 spots for 10 middle school boys 2 girls. We were able to get these students on the field for the spring 2015 NFL Flag Football Program. The Urban Youth Initiative hopes to continue this program.
