Oklahoma City Handbell Ensemble (OCHE) is celebrating its 10th year in 2018. Ringers in the Oklahoma City metro founded OCHE to expand their abilities and help further the art of handbell ringing.
In the early years, the groups were known as the OKC Ringtones and Bronze Tapestry until October 2011, when the ringers formed the current OCHE , an Oklahoma nonprofit corporation with a governing board of directors. In the summer of 2015, OCHE began creating educational opportunities for ringers and directors in Oklahoma; part of this endeavor included continuing the work of Central Oklahoma Ringers & Directors (CORD) after their disbanding. Over ten years of ringing, performances throughout Oklahoma have allowed ringers to explore a wide range of music from sacred, secular, classical, and pop styles. From the very beginning, OCHE has been committed to advancing the musical art of handbell/handchime ringing through concerts, education, and community.
Oklahoma City Handbell Ensemble is proud to be a member of Handbell Musicians of America and American Society of Composers and Arrangers (ASCAP).
Over the last several years the organization has been able to raise funds to purchase the handbells and handchimes that we use for rehearsals and concerts. The primary five-octave set of Schulmerich handbells played by OCHE were given a new lease on life when two board members drove to Pennsylvania in the summer of 2016 to purchase the set from a school that was disbanding their handbell program. The five-octave set of Malmark Choirchimes® are making their debut performances this season, thanks to a generous donation in February 2018.
The ability to purchase our own tables, pads, table cloths, and other basic equipment will allow us to have more freedom in our concert scheduling. At the present time scheduling needs to be coordinated with our host church so that their handbell choir does not need the use of tables, pads, and table cloths at the same time as OCHE's concerts. This can be limiting to our concerts dates, especially in the busy Christmas season.
If funds are able to be raised by fall of 2018, it would allow ample time to purchase our own equipment before our Christmas concerts in early December, 2018.
OCHE artists bring more than 155 years of ringing experience to the tables and come from many walks of life. Their love of music, and most specifically handbells, has been able to reach the lives of many in the Oklahoma City area through concerts and education.
