Help us fund our project to create community development programs at Egoli.
Egoli is an informal settlement located right outside of Cape Town. Informal settlements, sometimes called "squatter camps" are usually private pieces of land that people have built informal housing structures on because they cannot afford the rent of an actual home. These people have no other options of places to live other than these informal settlements which rarely have the most basic amenities (running water, electricity, etc.)
This semester, our polity and community development class is starting a fundraising campaign to raise the funds to purchase textbooks, notebooks, and pencils for students in Egoli. There is a huge number of drop outs in Egoli because they cannot afford school supplies or textbooks. With the money raised we will purchase these school supplies that will be placed in the community center in Egoli so the students will have access to them. The rest of the money will go towards purchasing copy paper and ink for their office which will be used to print résumés for the residents of Egoli. There are a large number of unemployed living in Egoli and they often times do not have a résumé or a way to write a résumé so we will be helping those to type up and print resumes to help them get work.
In addition to these projects we will also be holding workshops that promote impowerment and teach life skills. For the adults we will be teaching them money management (how to budget, how to save, etc.). For the teenagers we will have sessions that allow them to discover their dreams and goals while encouraging them to pursue those by staying in school and spending their free time wisely
We would so appreciate your help in reaching our goal so that we can provide Egoli's children with access to school supplies many of us take for granted and to allow the locals to create résumés to decrease unemployment.
