Lap Blankets for Elderly

Donation protected
Hi. My name is Kimberly Hanke. I spend 30 to 60 hours per week crocheting lap blankets and shawls for nursing home patients - the elderly and those with Alzheimer's. I love every minute of it. It's so rewarding to spend my time doing something that helps others.

I love picking out colors of yarn that I know they will like. I'm excited each time I start a new lap blanket or shawl and every time I complete one. I love to see their smiles and sometimes get hugs. It feels great to know they feel blessed to receive these items. I hear things like, "My legs get so cold." Two ladies at a nursing home said they wanted to leave their rooms and go out and watch TV but they get too cold. Both ladies each received a lap blanket and matching shawl.

Each lap blanket takes two 7 ounce skeins of yarn, takes me roughly 10 hours to crochet, and when finished measures approximately 30 inches wide and 40 inches long - enough to cover their lap and down to their shoes. I limit the width to 30 inches so the lap blanket doesn't get caught in the wheels of a wheelchair. Each shawl requires three skeins of yarn, takes me 15 hours to complete, and measures 30 inches by 60 inches.

As of 2/17/15, I have given away 59 lap blankets and 5 shawls to people who need and appreciate them. That's 64 total items. Currently, I'm working on item 71. I want to do more and there are numerous nursing homes in the area.

The problem is money for yarn. I'm on a fixed income and I have already spent more on yarn than I can afford. Family and friends have stepped in and bought yarn, but the need far surpasses what family and friends have been able to provide. I have plenty of time and desire to do the work but I need money for yarn to continue filling this need.

Can you help? I have set a goal to raise $2,300 which will provide one year's worth of yarn. Even a small amount for one lap blanket or shawl will help.

If you can help it will be so appreciated!

Please visit my Facebook site (I'm the Kimberly Hanke who is crocheting) where you can see 18 photos of some of the people who have received these items. Please ask family and friends to "like" it and share it with others, or email or Twitter others, sharing the link to this GoFundMe.com site.

Thank you so much for taking your time to read this and for doing whatever you can to help.

Sincerely,
Kimberly Hanke
