Dear friends,
For those of you who don't know, in November 2014 Renée found a bump in her pelvis area that became very painful. After testing, the doctor told her that she had sarcoma, which is a rare form of cancer, and that she needed treatment immediately. MD Anderson was recommended because they are the best with treating sarcoma.
The doctors don't know when the cancer first developed; they just know that it is fast growing because it moved from a bump to something physically visible very quickly (aka an aggressive tumor). This is why they needed to start treatment immediately. They also needed to start treatment quickly due to the tumor’s location. The tumor physically protrudes from her skin and goes through her tissue up to where some of her vital organs are. The pelvis has holes in the bone and the tumor grew through one of the bones and is very close to critical organs. As a result, the doctors decided that the first step was to shrink the tumor using chemo and radiation before attempting to operate so that they don't adversely affect those organs. Also, the tumor needs to be removed as a whole, in one go, so they can't risk operating now to remove some and then operating again.
In December 2014, Renée and her mom, Aunty Maha moved to an apartment in Houston 10 minutes from MD Anderson where she began her treatment. In July 2015 she moved to New Jersey to seek a second opinion from the doctors at Sloan Kettering and Columbia.
For a long time, Renée was on disability with work, but that is no longer the case. Her mom also left her job to be with her full-time and take care of her.
After almost a year of treatment, the medical bills are piling up, and your contribution is much appreciated. We thank you in advance for your help, and ask that you always keep Renée in your thoughts and prayers.
