Columbia University 2017 Japan Trip

Hello! My name is Sho Ito, and I’m currently a student at Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). Before beginning my graduate studies, I worked for the Japanese government in the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT). As a Policy Planner, my responsibilities focused on the development of policy to foster collaborative innovation between Universities and the private sector. Presently, I am working with several Japanese students to organize a study-abroad trip that will give SIPA students the opportunity to experience the “real Japan!”
While SIPA offers an extremely diverse course catalog, we feel that opportunities to learn about Japan remain limited. This trip should be an exciting chance for students to see for themselves what makes Japan such a special place.
Some of the scheduled activities include:
· A visit to the Fukushima and Miyagi prefectures to see the devastation caused by the Great East Japan earthquake
· Attending meetings to discuss economic and political issues with policy leaders in Tokyo
· Experiencing traditional Japanese culture in Kyoto
The participants of this trip will comprise the next generation of policy leaders, and we hope this trip will provide them a deep understanding of Japan.
This will mark the 11th year that SIPA students have participated in a Japan study-abroad trip. However, the high costs of plane tickets and accommodation fees make it challenging for students to participate. It is our wish that students with a strong interest in learning about Japan be able to participate regardless of their personal financial situation. This is why we need your help! 3/16-18 – [Tokyo] Meet with politicians and public officials for a policy discussion; visit SME plants, infrastructure companies, content companies, and view social entrepreneurship projects

こんにちは！コロンビア大学・国際公共政策大学院（SIPA）に留学中の伊藤匠と申します。留学前は、文部科学省にてイノベーション創出に向けた産学連携政策を担当していました。現在、大学院内の日本人有志が集まり、「コロンビア大学の学生に、リアルな日本の姿を知ってもらいたい！！」という強い想いの下、日本でのスタディー・トリップを企画しています。
大学院生活においては、残念ながら、日本の政治経済が話題に上がることは少なく、また学生数でも中国の約10分の１と圧倒され、日本のプレゼンス低下を感じざるを得ません。このスタディー・トリップでは、東日本大震災の被災地の現状の視察や政治家・ビジネスリーダーとの議論、京都での文化体験などを予定しており、こうした体験を通じて、リアルな日本を実感してもらい、日本に親しみを持ち、日本の立場を理解したリーダーを世界に送り出すきっかけにしたいと思っています。
SIPAジャパン・スタディー・トリップは、今回で11回目を迎え、過去参加した学生からは「日本を見る目が変わった」など高い評価を得ていますが、他方で、日本への渡航費・滞在費は非常に大きな負担となっています。私たちは、１人でも多くの意欲ある学生に日本の実像を知ってもらいたいと思っています。ご支援の程、よろしくお願いいたします。
