Who is He?
John Wenzel, also known as Good Rockin' Johnny, is a stalworth in the South Florida Blues Community. He is a current and founding member of the Legendary Iko Iko band. Some of the bands you have seen him in are Good Rockin' Johnny and the Wiseguys, Big City Band, Little Nicky and the Slicks, and The Fat Chance Blues Band. John is a full time musician and grew up in Miami. We all know him not only by his great talent, but also by his good heart and loyal friendship. John has always been first to perform in benefits for others in need!
What's Going On?
Recently, John started experiencing extreme pain in his hand, arm and neck. This severely affected his ability to play! After numerous doctor visits he was found to be in need of surgery in his neck and possible carpal tunnel surgery as well. The timing was impeccably wrong! Iko Iko was being sent by the South Florida Blues Society to compete in the prestigious International Blues Challenge in Memphis. One day before leaving Johns medical issues caused him to cancel this wonderful opportunity. He was scheduled for what was supposed to be 4 hours of surgery. It ended up being 11 hours of surgery! The issues were much more severe than expected. Among other issues, four verterbrae were fused and many bone spurs were removed.
John is currently unable to perform and is in neck traction. His hand is weakened with nerve damage keeping him from performing.
What Does he need?
Thankfully John has some insurance, but this only helps so much. He now has no source of income. The little savings he had is gone. But for the help of one angel, he could be in the street. There is a high deductible. Many things he needs are not covered by insurance. He is facing the possiblility of losing his ability to play which is his life! He is facing further surgery and lengthy rehabilitation.
