BWP: Shriners Transportation Fund

Something unique about the Miss World Organization is their emphasis on community service. They have a portion of competition called Beauty With A Purpose. As your Miss Virginia World 2015, I have chosen to focus on bringing awareness and raising funds for the Shriners Organization, specifically focusing on the transportation funds.
Each Shrine Temple has a transportation fund set up with a special unit of transporters, called Road Runners, who have driven millions of miles bringing children to Shriners Hospitals for Children. For each trip, they pick up a local child and their family, drive them to the hospital for treatment, and then returns them back home. The transportation is free of cost to the child’s family, but the Road Runners say they are paid with smiles from the child.
The closest hospital for most of the children treated from Virginia is in Greenville, South Carolina. There are 17 Shriners Temples that provide transportation for patients and their families to the Shriners Hospital for Children in Greenville, South Carolina. The Kazim Shrine Temple, with which I work in conjunction, is located in Roanoke, Virginia. Last year the Kazim road runners alone made 384 trips. That is over 100 more trips than any of the other 16 Temples.
Every trip varies in cost, depending on days needed at the hospital. Each trip from Roanoke to Greenville is roughly 600 miles round trip. When you include food and hotel, an average trip costs about $400. With that being said my goal is to raise $153,600 (an estimate of how much money was spent on the transportation of patients last year alone). This sounds like a lot at first, but all it takes is $400 to help one child make a trip that will help him or her for the rest of their life. Every penny makes a difference!
