Waterford Creativity to Poland!
Creative learning? Got it.
Representing Waterford at an international event? Yep.
How about representing Michigan? You better believe it.
What's that, actually representing the entire United States? Yeah, we are doing that too.
Once in a lifetime authentic learning experience? Check.
This experience will require that students complete the service learning challenge within the DI competitive program. This project is new and innovative in a myriad of ways. This event will provide the unique opportunity for Waterford Kettering HS students to be
“international representatives” at a world-wide event. Over 2,000 students will gather in Wrocław, Poland representing nations spanning the globe, and this delegation of students will be the sole representatives of the United States. Students will be immersed not only in a dynamic cultural experience, but they will be representing their community, their state, and their entire country as ambassadors at a huge international gathering – this is a cultural opportunity that few will experience in a lifetime, and will truly shape the lives and future learning of these students.
Students will benefit in multiple ways. They will work on improving leadership, and speaking and listening skills. Both the central and instant challenge components of the program require students to explore critical and creative thinking skills. The students also will benefit from the cultural experiences and opportunities that the trip provides – not only will the students be immersed in a unique cultural setting, they will be leading and learning alongside students representing 15+ nations and develop an appreciation for diverse cultures. This provides an enriching experience and enhances the curriculum because students are completing an authentic learning experience. This is a project that will be showcased at an international event and students will have to report on the success of the community service they completed. Going through this process allows students to plan, adapt, and implement a community service program all while learning skills that are critical for a 21st century world such as communication, critical thinking, organization, and leadership traits. This is a real life experience, not just learning from a textbook or lecture.
