My son Delorean (DJ) is a courageous ten year old heart transplant recipient and cancer survivor.
Born with congenital heart failure, DJ was diagnosed with Hypo Plastic Left heart syndrome. At 3 months of age, DJ received a heart transplant that saved his life.
After years of essential doctor appointments and treatments to further his recovery, we were informed that he has Lymphoma with a 30% chance of surviving. After receiving his diagnoses DJ was placed in an induced coma for over a month and after severe treatment with chemo therapy and spending over a year of his life in Children’s Hospital of Cincinnati, DJ yet again overcame another hurdle.
However, trouble has come yet again for DJ. With extensive chemo therapy, he missed his first growth spurt. Dj’s wish for his 10th birthday was to grow, a gift mom could not provide. Dj and his mother often have to explain to other children that he is just as strong as the other kids his age although he is not as tall.
Endocrinologists have recommended the use of growth hormones while he is still of age to boost a growth spurt. Unfortunately, the cost for the injection is very expensive and a medicine that his insurance does not cover. His hematologist and cardiologist have consented and suggested to the growth hormone. The injections will need to be administered until he is 16 years of age, however, the medicine will cost 50,000, which in his single parent household is not cost efficient.
Right now, DJ stands at 39 inches or 3.3 feet tall. This is the average height for a 4 year old. With the growth hormone, DJ will notice a height increase in as little as one year.
My goal is to raise enough money to give DJ the wish that he deserves. After facing the challenges that he has faced, the only thing a mother wants for her child is to see them satisfied.
