Many of us shop at Safeway in Felton, we all have a favorite checker there, and for many of us that favorite checker is Blair - the kind man in the check out line with a twinkle in his eye, who always has a positive attitude and can cheer you up on your worst day.
Well unfortunately, this wonderful man and his sweet family have fallen on very hard times. Earlier this month, Blair rushed his beautiful wife Donnice to the emergency room because she was experiencing horrific abdominal pain. Long story short, she has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer. While at the hospital, she had both ovaries, tubes and lymph nodes removed. Next she is facing a grueling bout of chemo, followed by a stay at Stanford for a complete hysterectomy and lymph node removal in her neck, and then more rounds of chemo.
Donnice has been a stay at home mother to their two children, Shonnon (17) and Gerrick (14). Blair has been the sole provider who is now on a leave of absence from work while he cares for his wife and keeps whatever normalcy possible in the lives of their kids. He has filed for family leave disability but has not started receiving checks yet. The sad reality is that it can take up to two months to receive the first one.
On top of all that, their only car is not running. It needs a new crank case seal, cam seal, timing belt and water pump, amongst other things. A local mechanic thinks he can get it all done for just under $1500.
So I am hoping that our community, family and friends can raise that $1500 so Blair can drive Donnice to her chemo appointments, plus some living expense money to keep them afloat during this extremely difficult time.
