Brendan and Kim McGuigan were raising three children and had a baby on the way. They lived in the quiet countryside of St. Mary’s Road, Prince Edward Island, Canada. This is the kind of place where everyone knows your name. Life for the McGuigan family was simple and peaceful. Brendan and Kim were the kind of couple who would rather spend time with each other and their children than be anywhere else.
It was Brendan’s habit to cross the road each evening and share a cup of tea with his father. On the beautiful sunny evening of August 20, 2014, Brendan left for his cup of tea and left his family’s lives forever. He and his father were shot and brutally murdered as they sat in the elder McGuigan’s kitchen. Within minutes, Kim would receive the phone call that would leave her to raise 3 - soon to be 4 - children alone. Brendan’s children: Abbey, 9; Kayden, 7; and Mataya, 3 had lost a quiet, thoughtful daddy who took them camping, danced in the kitchen to the Saturday Night Hoedown and was an ever-present fan at Kayden’s hockey games. Kim, pregnant and devastated, had to be a tower of strength for her children as they all absorbed what this loss meant for them. Baby Kenzie was born in December and will never know the gentle, kind man that her father was.
The people of Prince Edward Island have been a tremendous support to Kim and her young children but the financial challenges ahead for a single mom and four children are going to be steep. Once her maternity leave is finished, Kim plans to return to her job as an elementary school teacher. A hard-working, dedicated mom, there is no doubt that Kim will do everything in her power to ensure that her children are cared for.
This is an effort to alleviate financial stress as she grieves for her husband and tries to raise four children alone.
