Mobile Color Lab: Pigments & Dyes

Donation protected
Hello and welcome to the Mobile Color Laboratory!
Artist bio:
My name is Madelaine Corbin, and I am an artist working in Corvallis, Oregon. I am a BFA candidate at Oregon State University pursuing a degree in Art with a minor in Art History that I intend to finish this June. I have spent the past six months preparing my thesis work and am looking forward to kickstarting it this term. As a student I have felt limited financially to pursue my ambitions at full scale, which is why I am asking the Go Fund Me community for your support in realizing my dream work. Thank you for your interest in my project, and remember anything helps--I am grateful for ALL donations!

Project description:

The Mobile Color Lab will be a garden of plants grown for their natural dyes on a mobile surface. The pigment and dye garden’s development is based on the intersection of art, horticulture, and community engagement. Throughout the entirety of the build, planting, and eventual growth and maintenance of the garden there is space for interested volunteers to become involved in the collective success of the project.

At the completion of the physical garden, anticipated in the spring of 2017, workshops about natural color, seminars about soils and the chemistry of color, and garden tours will commence. With the launch of the mini-events will be a series of printed matter, including a practical field guide, pigment sample books, and creative material about color gathered through open-submission. The Mobile Color Lab is a place for open experimentation with color, idea generation about the natural world, and engagement with each of the senses in the experience the Color Lab provides.

Two Goals:
The project currently has two goals correlating to the support of this Go Fund Me community. If the first goal of $1,000 is reached, we will be able to produce the bicycle version #1 of the Mobile Color Lab. If the second goal of $3,500 is reached, the full-size flatbed trailer version #2 of the Mobile Color Lab will go into production. The size of the project is therefore left up to you and where you would like to see this project go!

Version #1 (see below) includes the same project activities, printed matter, and has the same intentions of the large-scale project but with a significantly lessened financial burden. This version of the project would operate as a model pigment and dye garden that can work the same as the larger model, but would produce less plant matter to use when dyeing--a micro dye garden! Version #1 requires $1,000 total to be successfully funded.

Version #2 (see below) is the full-scale project realized on a flatbed trailer. This pigment and dye garden on wheels will be pulled to local venues for workshops, guest lectures with color experts, and experimenting with natural grown color in community-accessible spaces. Version #2 will be successfully funded if we reach $3,500.Who will benefit:
The Mobile Color Lab will benefit the greater Corvallis community including students whose schools the lab visits, workshop attendees, anyone curious about color reached by the printed matter, and all garden visitors.

Questions?
- Are you intersted in getting involved in the project? The Mobile Color Lab wants to hear from you! Expertise in building, gardening, hoop house assembly, working with natural dyes, as well as simply offering helping hands are all welcomed. Fill out the form here to get started.

- The Mobile Color Lab is part of the thesis work of Madelaine Corbin, but will continue to operate into the 2017 spring and summer after graduation. There is no end date for the project.

- Where will the Mobile Color Lab live?
While the Lab will travel locally, it will mainly be housed at the Oak Creek Center for Urban Horticulture at Oregon State University for the first 6 months.

- What will the funds be used for?
The funds will be used for a few key project ingredients: 1. color, and on a mobile dye garden that means soil, seeds and plant starts, 2. programming, printed matter,  and travel costs to get to workshop sites, and 3. build materials such as lumber, greenhouse grade plastic, PVC, irrigation supplies and more.

- What if you make more than the $1000 needed for version #1, but not enough for version #2? Where would the extra money go?
In this scenario, the extra money will help sponsor the longevity of the project. Every extra $500 will sponsor 1 workshop or site visit the Mobile Color Lab travels to.

- Are you interested in bringing the Color Lab to your venue for a workshop or other event? Contact me through my Go Fund Me profile!
