I was first elected to the Florida House in 1996 after doing extensive community service and fighting the "Water Wars" in Florida. I worked for free for years and the people sent me to be their public servant . When I got there, I never forgot where I came from or who sent me, and I never forget who I worked for, the people. I was a Republican at that time, a Republican who believed in less governemnt in our private lives, accountability of our tax dollars, fighting for those who can't fight for themselves- residents in for profit nursing homes , the disabled , and children. I opposed the lies that my own party demanded I follow. They tried a few times to get rid of me as I have a very independent mind. They funded candidates to run against me.
I was re-elected and moved on to the Senate. Very shortly I realized that my party had morphed into something I could not agree with. They hated science, honesty, accountability, teachers, the working class; they hated necessary regulations and they suddenly hated anything that protected the environment. They just hate. They were in your bedroooms, your uterus, and your most personal decisions, as with the Terri Schiavo case. The republican party played politics with that very sad situation.
They pander to whatever extreme factions would get them the most votes, just by telling these factions anything they wanted to hear. They are even passing laws to discriminate against gays and pursuing a bill that permits hospitals to turn sick people away if they are gay.
I realized, and witnessed what this NEW GOP was doing. They were building a huge powerful machine that was now really owned by the corporations. It resembled the gangs and the organized crime up north where I grew up. Same tactics, same building blocks of protection. A cop here, a Judge there, a States Attorney and so on to put people in places that would to give them more power and more protection.
I do not have enough room here to tell you of all that I have experienced about this NEW GOP. They have taken the Republic that belongs to the people and it's almost gone.
They use the Citizens Unted decision made by their Supreme Court Justice's (building blocks) to allow corporations to be "people" for the purposes of allowing them to contribute unGodly, unlimited, anonymous amounts of money. They do this to buy the races they must have to totally keep control of what is supposed to be OUR representative government.
They lie, cheat and slander the opposition to their "Chosen candidates". The chosen candidates which are picked by the leaders, may be dumb, clever or extreme as one could imagine, but they follow blindly and that is what the NEW GOP must have. I refused to follow blindly and therefore they decided I had to go.
Republican leadership demanded whileI was on the FPSC that I give the big electric utilities all they asked for in rate cases even when it was not justified. When I didn't go along, they slandered and attacked me, and refused to consider my re-application. They did not want fair, all they cared about was paying back their contributors even as it meant screwing the rate payers.
When I ran for a House seat that had a first term incumbent follower, whose votes were horrible and 100 % with Republican leadership, the Republican Party of Florida defamed me intentionally, and told people I "violated the law", which was a bald faced lie . They even got a shill Democrat to run to take votes away from me, as I ran as an Independent. The Republican "chosen one" helped this Democrat shill by going to the lobbyists and raising money for this man who never even went out to vote for himself, never showed up to any debates. Needless to say, I am no longer a Republican. How can I be, knowing what I know about them? The crooked tactics and the buying of elections has to stop.
I filed a lawsuit against the Republican Party of Florida, but cannot afford the costs of depositions of those responsible for the malice and intentional lies, expert witnesses, and attorneys. The Republican Party of Florida has admitted the defamation because they didn't even file the affirmative defense of truth. They know they lied, and they know I have no money to fight them. This has to stop. How can voters ever know who to vote for if lying is allowed, and continues? How can people ever get justice against the lies of big money? They need to feel a sting for chronically using these tactics.
My lawsuit can give them that sting and that is what I want. We have to stop this and take our system back. There is great case law in Florida now that could make my case even stronger. The days of Sullivan vs the NY Times have changed. I need help to show that the average citizen can fight them. I need help to show that when a public servant has the integrity to do the right thing, he or she can prevail.
I fought hard to help the people who voted for me. I fought my own party and I never sold the people out. I cannot do this alone and I need help. I want to take my case to a jury.
If I prevail, it will make a huge difference, and it will allow us to get real public servants back to represent the people, and not a political sell- out party.
I promise to fight them with all I have and if I win it will help every other candidate who really wants to make an honest difference. The candidates who are not the corporate chosen are the ones who may be the only hope we have to take our system back from the greedy blind followers, and the extremists that are wreaking havoc on us all.
