Nestled at the base of a 500 foot sheer cliff called Apache Leap, the Arizona mining town of Superior struggles to cope with a difficult present while holding onto hopes for a better and brighter future.
Among those hopes for the future is the desire to establish a community-based radio station which will be staffed with local residents and air programming of interest to the community and whenever possible, written and produced by local residents.
Herein lies the challenge and an opportunity for you to help this endeavor.
For many years, the economy of Superior was based on the Magma Mine and Smelter, one of the few underground copper mines in Arizona. In the early 1980's, caught between the high cost of underground mining and the dwindling price of copper on world markets, the Magma Mine closed down. Overnight, the mine gates were chained and padlocked and the entire workforce found themselves without jobs.
Presently, Superior struggles with one of the highest unemployment and poverty rates in Arizona, the few remaining local businesses wage a daily struggle to keep their doors open, and high school seniors graduate with the knowledge their future cannot be found in the place they have called home for most or all of their lives.
This is why we are turning to you for help. The desire to have a community based radio station is very much alive in Superior, but as you can imagine, the town is hard pressed to provide the financial resources needed to make this hope a reality.
We hope you will appreciate the need for a community based radio station for Superior and will be moved to contribute to the fulfillment of a dream. We will be deeply grateful for anything you care to do in our behalf.
