Camp Hope...Nepal disaster relief

Donation protected
Almost six months has passed and I wanted to give everyone a brief update on Camp Hope....

Winter is in full swing and thanks to several donors, the residents received sweaters, jackets and blankets to get them through the cold season. Camp Hope is one of the lucky ones....through the far reaches of Dwarika's Hotel, many people have visited the camp providing various donations; water filtration systems for the camp, vocational training expertise, adult literacy classes, food, medicine and English for the children, to name a few.

The money I raised through family and friends in June went towards school fees, clothing, medicine, food, emergency doctor's visits to a nearby hospital, as well as the unexpected....dental care, shoes and building materials.

In early December, a team of American geologists and engineers took the arduous journey to Sindhupalchowk, the district where Camp Hope residents are from. Unfortunately, this was the epicenter of the May 12nd earthquake. The land was devasted, flattening most of its' villages to rubble and causing ripples in the earth making it unstable. Out of this devastation, Sangita Shrestha Einhaus (the same woman who manages Camp Hope) created the Dwarika's Foundation. One of the purposes of this organization, is to rebuild and restore 14 villages in 6 locations, as well as construct of 222 seismic approved and designed homes. All of which will incorporate the traditional Nepalese lifestyle and design, thus keeping their heritage alive.

The team conducted detailed surveys, took soil samples and are identifying land that would be safe to build upon, as well as determine cultivable land. As such, several of the village elders are already in the mountains tending to their remaining livestock. It is the dream of the residents of Camp Hope to return to the mountains; rebuild their villages, homes, monasteries, schools and get back to their former lives, but with a new outlook on life.
