Kevin's Lung Transplant Fundraiser

Donation protected
Our dear friend Kim and her husband Kevin have been married for 17 years. For the past eight years, Kevin has been battling an interstitial lung disease (ILD). He has idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, where the lung tissue becomes scarred and prevents the lungs from functioning correctly.  He has been on oxygen for the last two years and is unable to breathe on his own. He struggles with small movements in the house and is in a desperate position and needs a double lung transplant within the next few months. This disease is incurable. On November 7-8th, 2016 they had their first assessment meetings with Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC.

HOW WILL THE MONEY BE SPENT?
Based on Duke's financial assessment Kim and Kevin are required to provide $15,000. Due to the past eight years of medical expenses, their nest egg is depeleted. This is a huge amount of money that they do not have and they cannot proceed without your help.

The money will cover Kevin's medications and medical expenses as well as a required temporary relocation to Durham. This  required relocation will provide quick access for the transplant and months of rehabilitation care.  Duke will not grant Kevin candidacy in the Lung Transplant Program without proper documentation of these funds.

Kevin and Kim are hoping that he will be considered for the next step in the transplant process and will need the funds by March, 2017. We know that this seems rather hurried, but Kevin is racing against time. Duke has informed them that Kevin's disease has advanced and he has a small window of opportunity before he becomes too ill to survive the surgery. His disease is in its final stage.

WHY DOES THIS MEAN SO MUCH?
Kim's husband, Kevin, is only 53 years old.  Those who know their whole story know they have battled impossible odds. We cannot think of anyone who would want to watch their loved one die, when there are options out there that can give them back their life.

This family is not one to ask for help, but they cannot do this alone.  For the past eight years, Kim has been Kevin's sole caregiver as well as the financial provider, since Kevin is unable to work.  Kim teaches fulltime and tutors after school to make ends meet. It has been hard on her to work these extra hours with a terminally ill husband at home needing her care.

Words cannot express how thankful Kim and Kevin will be for your donation. You are giving Kim a chance to save her husband, her best friend, and her life. You're giving Kevin a second chance at living. They would be eteranlly grateful for any help you can provide, whether it be a few dollars or a prayer.

WE ARE close friends of both Kim and Kevin and have witnessed their day to day struggles with Kevin's declining health. This transplant is Kevin's last chance. As close friends we are reaching out to help them get the funds Duke is requiring for him to even be considered a transplant candidate. We know Kim can't do this alone on a North Carolina teacher's salary and are desperately asking for your help. We would be truly grateful to see this financial burden lifted so they can focus on Kevin's health.
